Two cats have been living in a house for a long time. They stretch and groom their whiskers whenever they feel like it. There is only one thing that prevents them from being fully carefree cats: the dog that has come to live with them. Its habits are so different—it simply can’t stand it.

The dog tries to adapt and doesn’t even mind living like a cat. But it seems that, in that house, there’s no room for anyone else. Or is there?

About Boca Aberta

Boca Aberta is a project designed to provide new creative experiences for children aged 3 and above, foster critical thinking, and empower education and culture professionals who work with these age groups.

Over nearly 10 years, it has presented performances at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II and in schools across Lisbon, sparking curiosity and imagination in young audiences.

Since its beginning, Boca Aberta has promoted equitable access to its programming, offering accessibility resources and ensuring that all sessions are relaxed performances—held in an adapted, welcoming, and flexible environment.

Since 2023, in partnership with the Plano Nacional das Artes, it has expanded to other regions. The following year, it began a three-year cycle, broadening its scope in close collaboration with the municipalities of Lagos, Ourém, and Ponte de Lima, strengthening dialogue between national and local structures in artistic creation and mediation.

This year, local artistic communities were invited to participate in the creation of two new performances, to be presented in the partner municipalities. “Boca Aberta Conversations” and a workshop for education professionals are also taking place, reinforcing the project’s connection to the school community.

Over these three years, Boca Aberta positions itself as a capacity-building initiative, gradually enabling new artistic structures to become autonomous in managing the project regionally, while sharing resources, knowledge, and building creative networks for children’s arts.

An initiative of Teatro Nacional D. Maria II and Fundação “la Caixa”, in collaboration with BPI, and in partnership with Plano Nacional das Artes and the municipalities of Lagos, Ourém, and Ponte de Lima.
