3rd Edition of the Algarve International Architecture Conference (JIAA) Takes Place in Tavira on 18 and 19 September

The Algarve Regional Chapter of the Portuguese Architects’ Association will host the 3rd edition of the Algarve International Architecture Conference (JIAA) on 18 and 19 September. This year’s event will take place at the António Pinheiro Municipal Theatre in Tavira.

Over the course of two days, architects, legal experts, academics, judges, and other specialists will come together to discuss some of the most current and relevant issues affecting architectural practice. The programme will combine disciplinary reflection with an examination of the profound legislative changes that have been reshaping project design, licensing, and construction processes in Portugal.

The 2026 edition opens with an international session dedicated to the work and legacy of Oscar Niemeyer, one of the most influential figures in modern architecture. This session will explore the contemporary relevance of his ideas and architecture’s ability to remain culturally significant beyond its own time.

The programme continues with a debate on the recent changes introduced to the legal framework governing architecture and urban planning, particularly within the scope of the so-called Urban Planning Simplex reform. The discussion will critically assess its impact on architects’ professional activity, public administration, project quality, and the broader transformation of the built environment.

On the second day, the Conference will focus on the new regulatory framework resulting from Ordinance No. 320/2026, analysing the implications of the new documentary and procedural requirements for the preparation and submission of architectural projects.

The practical dimension of the profession will also feature prominently in this edition, with the presentation of a professional support toolkit developed to provide architects with useful instruments and resources for their day-to-day practice.

The Algarve International Architecture Conference has established itself as a forum for professional development, knowledge sharing, and critical debate on the challenges currently facing architecture. It seeks to bridge disciplinary reflection with the practical reality of professionals and institutions involved in shaping the territory.

For the Algarve Regional Chapter of the Portuguese Architects’ Association, this third edition also reinforces the importance of creating regular opportunities in the Algarve for informed discussion on architecture, legislation, territory, and professional practice, bringing together different perspectives and fostering a culture of dialogue among architects, public administration, the judiciary, academia, and civil society.
