The Ballet Flamenco de Barcelona presents a bold and contemporary interpretation of Carmen, Bizet’s iconic myth, moving beyond the traditional narrative to explore the ongoing struggle for women’s rights. In this version, Carmen, a strong and passionate Romani woman, confronts an unequal world, becoming a symbol of freedom and courage. Her love affair with the bullfighter Escamillo shapes an intense story, expressed through stunning flamenco choreography, explosive footwork, and elements of contemporary dance.
The production masterfully blends the sounds of a symphony orchestra with Bizet’s original music, incorporating innovative touches of jazz and the authentic expression of flamenco singing. Under the artistic direction of David Gutiérrez, this production not only pays tribute to the work of Prosper Mérimée, but also reflects the cultural diversity of Barcelona, a city where Franco became closely acquainted with the many languages and artistic styles that define it.
Designed to captivate both opera enthusiasts and flamenco admirers, this performance offers a rich artistic experience that points towards a new paradigm in 21st-century performing arts. The fusion of different stage languages and the collaboration of renowned artists from around the world promise to take audiences on an emotional journey celebrating the passion, pain, and freedom that Carmen embodies.
