For almost five decades, the National Ballet Company (CNB) has presented landmark works from the classical and contemporary ballet repertoire by internationally renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine, Kurt Jooss, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, William Forsythe, Hans van Manen, Jiří Kylián, Mauro Bigonzetti, Ohad Naharin, Martha Graham, Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman, and many others.
At the same time, the company has invested in commissions that contribute to the development of a distinctive artistic repertoire. These include collaborations with Portuguese creators such as Armando Jorge, Olga Roriz, Rui Lopes Graça, Vasco Wellenkamp, Fernando Duarte, Filipe Portugal, and Miguel Ramalho, as well as established choreographers from the fields of contemporary dance and independent theatre, including Rui Horta, Paulo Ribeiro, Tiago Rodrigues, Victor Hugo Pontes, Tânia Carvalho, Clara Andermatt, Marco da Silva Ferreira, and Sónia Baptista.
Since September 2024, choreographer Fernando Duarte has served as Artistic Director of the CNB.
Only Duos is a programme by the National Ballet Company that celebrates the power and intimacy of the encounter between two performers on stage. Marked by a sense of timelessness, this cycle of duets brings together works by different choreographers, exploring a variety of choreographic languages, from classical to contemporary, and highlighting the richness of dance for two.
Each piece forms a unique universe where emotion, tension, connection, and contrast converge in a physical and expressive dialogue that transcends time and style. Only Duos is an invitation to experience dance in its purest form, through the delicacy and intensity that only two people can share.
