The Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Jan Wierzba, presents a festive carnival repertoire consisting of waltzes, polkas and operettas.
This programme will recreate the elegance of the 19th-century European ballrooms, particularly the Viennese tradition that shaped the cultural identity of the Strauss family. Conducted by Jan Wierzba, the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra will evoke the atmosphere of the grand society soirées in which the aristocracy, and, later, the bourgeois public, adopted the waltz and polka as symbols of fashion, refinement and celebration.
Johann Strauss II, the "King of Waltz", holds a central place in this programme. The brilliance of the "Die Fledermaus" overture, the melodic charm of "Rosen aus dem Süden", the vibrant colours of "Im Krapfenwaldl" and the humour of "Perpetuum mobile" reveal the composer's gift for transforming dance music into an internationally appealing art form. The lyrical profile of "Frühlingsstimmen" and the energy of fast polkas like "Tritsch-Tratsch" and "Vergnügungszug" further demonstrate his brilliance.
Compositions by Josef and Eduard Strauss complete the portrait of this dynasty. The fast polkas "Jokey-Polka" and "Plappermäulchen" by Josef Strauss, as well as the favourite "Pizzicato-Polka", demonstrate their rhythmic sophistication, while Eduard's "Mit Vergnügen" captures the lightness and energy of Vienna's festive nights.
Staged at the António Pinheiro Municipal Theatre in concert format, this show invites the audience to rediscover a cosmopolitan universe where music, elegance and humour combine in perfect harmony.
