The Gospel Collective, led by singer and choir director Manuela Oliveira, is a Lisbon-based ensemble comprising around 50 voices, bringing together singers from diverse musical backgrounds and nationalities across the Portuguese-speaking world. The group features experienced and acclaimed performers. United as a collective since 2010, the story of the Gospel Collective is a long one and has become increasingly well known to the general public. Its roots go back to 1999 with the group D’Vine (directed by Carlos Ançã), followed by 100 Vozes Gospel (directed by Guy Destino) and Faith Gospel Choir (directed by Leopoldo Timana and Anastácia Carvalho), ensembles of which the Collective's founding members were a part.
Its repertoire includes well-known songs that everyone can sing along to, as well as lesser-known pieces that go straight to the heart. Initially based on the African-American gospel tradition, Negro spirituals, and contemporary urban gospel, the group's musical focus has since expanded to include Afro-gospel. Today, the Gospel Collective performs songs in English, Portuguese, and Swahili.
Young at heart, modern, inclusive, and committed to collaboration, the Gospel Collective is renowned for the many partnerships it has established in recording studios, festivals, concert halls, and special productions, while always remaining true to its core gospel spirit.
Recent highlights include performances in the show Variações at the Belém Tower Gardens alongside the Metropolitan Orchestra, accompanying singers Ana Bacalhau, Conan Osíris, Lena d’Água, Paulo Bragança, and Selma Uamusse; participation in the Fado no Castelo event at São Jorge Castle with fado singer Raquel Tavares; the São João celebrations in Porto's Aliados Avenue with guitarist Marta Pereira da Costa; a tribute to Nelson Mandela with Kalaf in Lisbon's Municipal Square; the iconic Amazing Grace event hosted by Lux Frágil, featuring Kalaf and Moullinex; and the Red Bull Culture Clash at the Lisbon Coliseum, alongside Moullinex Crew, Da Chick, The Legendary Tigerman, Xinobi, and Marta Ren.
The Collective has also taken part in the Lion King gala at Centro Cultural de Belém, performed at the NOS Alive Festival with D’Alva, and collaborated both in the studio and live on stage with artists including Jimmy P, Virgul, Selma Uamusse, Wraygunn, D’Alva, Rita Redshoes, Luísa Sobral, Marta Hugon, Miguel Ângelo, Carlos Martins Quinteto, SHOUT!, Fernando Cunha, Diogo Piçarra, Murta, and Monda, as well as participating in productions such as the television series Lua de Mel and events including Rock in Rio, among many others.
This remarkable journey has created countless memorable moments. With a mission to spread the Gospel message through music, the Gospel Collective has also presented numerous headline concerts, winning over audiences unfamiliar with the genre in venues and auditoriums throughout Portugal and beyond. Their international appearances have included performances in Belgium at the Ghent Festival, as well as concerts in Italy, London, Germany, and Spain, where they continue to attract a growing following.
Perhaps it is this cultural and musical diversity that makes their performances so vibrant and uplifting, while also creating moments of contemplation that are unique and deeply moving. Applause and tears come together in a spirit of shared participation and communion between performers and audience alike.
