"The underwear fell off the washing line." This is the first line, both prosaic and matter-of-fact, spoken by Majuscule, the solo play written by Jacinto Lucas Pires for a remarkable actress, Luísa Cruz, one of the most outstanding performers of her generation.
Directed by Marcos Barbosa, the production marks another chapter in his long-standing artistic collaboration with the playwright.
In this monologue, Luísa Cruz plays Benedetta Croce, an actress of a certain age who receives a phone call from a film director inviting her to take part in a project called Medea. From that moment on, she embarks on an encounter with herself, confronting her past and her future with an unflinching sense of humour and self-irony.
"In the mirror, my face reminds me of someone I used to be."
Time itself seems to lose its bearings for this woman: a mother, divorcée, unemployed, employer, alone in a house that is far too large. An actress and a woman awakened by the ancient "M" of Medea, Euripides' masterpiece, which resonates throughout the play like an echo or a response in a living dialogue.
She embraces her full "wisdom and insight":
"No, I do not need people to look at me. I am a Majuscule Woman."
And yet, we want to look, Benedetta/Luísa. We want to bear witness to this Majuscule.
