In a programme centred on Horn Concerto No. 1 by Richard Strauss, with Todd Sheldrick as soloist, this score with its neoclassical echoes, although written in 1883 at the height of the Late Romantic period, will be complemented superbly by the symphonies that complete the programme.
Opening the concert is the Symphony in D Major by Jan Voříšek, a Bohemian composer of the Classical period whose work stands at the transition to early Romanticism. Born in 1791, the year of Mozart’s death, his Symphony already hints at the drama and intensity that would come to characterise the decades that followed.
The concert concludes with Mozart’s Prague Symphony, a reminder that the Austrian genius was also well acquainted with, and a frequent visitor to, the capital of the Bohemian lands, today known as the Czech Republic.
